New York Auto Insurance

New York is on of the 12 “No Fault” states. Therefore, every driver is required to purchase Personal Injury Protection, PIP, in which the driver’s insurance company covers injury-related expenses and associated costs as a result of an automobile accident regardless who is at fault. The theory behind a No Fault system is to ensure every motorist is protected by receiving immediate medical attention because the insurance company pays regardless who is at fault. Also, this limits a driver’s ability to sue or be sued for damages in most accidents.

Since there is no pure No fault system, however, based on the severity of the accident/injury or monetary amount, if you are at fault you may still be subject to a lawsuit for damages. Basic PIP benefits normally include compensation for medical costs, wages lost, loss of services, and death benefits. Drivers may choose to purchase additional PIP coverage over the basic $50,000 per person amount. For more information on No Fault insurance, check out our article listed on no fault insurance .

Minimum Coverage - Liability auto insurance is mandatory in New York. It helps cover injury and damage costs that you may have caused to another party in an accident. The required minimum limit coverage is 25/50/10--$25,000 per person for injuries, up to $50,000 for all parties, and $10,000 for property damage that you may have caused the other party during an accident.) Furthermore, in the event of an accident resulting in death, the personal injury minimums increase to 50/100.

Uninsured liability insurance, which protects you in the event of personal injury in which the other party is at fault and does not have insurance, is also required. Like PIP, the personal injury minimums are the same as liability insurance, 25/50.

Like Massachusetts, the cost of New York auto insurance is determined by the performance behavior of all the state's drivers. Therefore, New York auto insurance companies take the total cost of insuring New York drivers, including settlements and legal fees, and divides it up among the total number of drivers.

However, the percentage you of insurance premiums you will pay are decided by: your driving record, your age, where you live, and the type of car you drive.

Since insurance companies use different methods of computing a driver’s insurance premium, it does pay to shop around for a policy with the best coverage at the lowest price. The good news is that shopping on-line and comparing quotes is relatively easy.

Optional Auto Insurance - is available for medical, comprehensive, collision, and underinsured motorist coverage.
